Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) FAQS

What is SNG ? LPG-Air or SNG, is essentially synthetic natural gas that is formed by mixing vaporized propane or LPG with air. Once mixed it forms a homogeneous mixture that can be used as a direct replacement for natural gas in combustion applications.

Why SNG ? Companies in most industries require a back-up system for their primary energy source when there is a risk of energy interruption or when there is a significant economic benefit.

Why do we need SNG in South Africa Propane-Air standby systems allow natural gas users the ability to have live back-up when ever required. Because propane air is a “synthetic natural gas” (SNG), it can be used as a direct substitute for natural gas. Unlike diesel, fuel oil or propane, SNG does not require additional gas trains, piping, regulators, or special fuel delivery systems inside the factory. The propane air mixture is simply connected to the natural gas piping just after the metering station (and pressure reducing station) but before entering the building(s). These systems can be placed in live back-up so that they take over upon falling pressure, or they can be turned on manually. In either the case it is akin to having an electrical generator.

Question? Why does my business need an SNG backup system? ANSWER! Companies in most industries require a backup system for their primary energy source when there is a risk of energy interruption. An SNG system works exactly like an electrical generator — but for your gas supply. When natural gas supply fails, your SNG system automatically takes over with zero interruption to your operations. Question? How quickly does an SNG system take over when gas supply fails? Answer! SNG systems can be set to live standby mode, meaning they take over automatically the moment falling pressure is detected — with no manual intervention required. They can also be activated manually when needed. Question? What is the difference between the Blendaire II, Vapoaire, and TXV systems? Answer! The Blendaire II is best suited for high accuracy industrial mixing where precise CV control is required and uses a SIEMENS PLC feed-forward control system. The Vapoaire is designed for heavy duty outdoor industrial applications with larger capacity requirements up to 250 MMBtu/hr. The TXV is a compact self-contained packaged system ideal for straightforward natural gas backup applications from 2.5 to 28 MMBtu/hr. Contact us and we will help you choose the right system.
